Do You See What I See?

I love this image! I love it so much that I used it a few years ago to market our salary guide (some of you may recall it).

I even have it as wallpaper in my home office. Every time I see it, I smile and find inspiration. I call him Ernest. I adore him and try to see the world through his eyes.

Unicorns are mythical creatures and are known to many different cultures across the globe. The unicorn image has developed and changed over many centuries, but Ernest is perfect to me. Why? While many of you may see a rhinoceros, Ernest believes he is a unicorn, and that’s what I also see.

Many early explorers, kings, philosophers, and scientists (Aristotle, Marco Polo, etc.), were apparently fascinated by unicorns. Ordinary people believed they existed and were not just the fruit of our collective imagination. Unicorns are often described as lucky, intelligent, brave, and elusive (being too hard to capture!).

Whatever lore one prefers, for me, Ernest, our unicorn, represents creativity―the joy of discovering that there is more to someone than meets the eye.

I recently delivered a presentation and spoke about what constitutes a good recruiter in our current job market, and I utilised ‘his powers’. It does not matter if we are HR, internal or an agency recruiter; we are in the same boat―our technique must be refined and finessed in meeting our changing environment.

We require a visionary approach in seeing the additional dimension of people that our eyes alone cannot capture. Our candidates and even our employees cannot be viewed through a one-dimensional lens.

Like Ernest, everyone is a unicorn and many other things.

Does your business’ recruiter (internal or agency) have the skills and sensibility to uncover the potential of your candidates? Those invisible qualities, skills, and attributes, including those that might not be yet fully developed.

It is not in discovering and discerning what is easy to see, but uncovering what may be hidden―the potential and the seed for the future. This is also what job seekers and your employees are craving―to be seen.

Our current job market.

On the surface, the unemployment rate at 5.5% presents a ‘promise’ for our economy. However, on the flip side, it also means a shortage of workers.

So if your business relies on hiring as part of its growth strategy, you could find yourself in a confined situation.

This is where Ernest comes into view. He inspires us to see beyond the template and the norm. He challenges us to see the potential in people, and we need to do that well before we meet them in an interview. We should be adepts to read a resume and ‘see’ the potential of transferrable skills and the personal traits that enabled them to successfully navigate their careers to date. Ernest challenges us to check our assumptions, bias and frame of reference.

Since we are experiencing a shortage of skilled workers, no one has the luxury of being ‘superficial’ in their recruitment strategy. The lack of talent that everyone is drumming about (and for a good reason) means we cannot afford to miss any potential talent.

Even in everyday interactions with your employees, what else do you see? Do you see their potential?

And what about job briefs? These also must be viewed from the lens of a unicorn. This is where a good recruiter comes into their own; not only do they see what talent looks like when it is disguised, they take it one step further. They are excited to see the potential of the job briefs and what opportunity they represent for candidates. The brief can never be run of the mill―it must also be a unicorn.

There is a particular skill in great recruiting. Seeing and believing in unicorns takes talent and something special―maybe even ‘mysterious’ that cannot easily be defined.

I hope your recruiter also asks you, ‘do you see what I see’.
